For a one-day escape from the dusty safari jeep, nothing beats the Empakai Crater Hike. It is the “quieter sibling” of the famous Ngorongoro Crater offering a lush, emerald-green paradise that you can only truly experience on foot. Located about 40km northeast of the Ngorongoro Crater, Empakai is a dramatic volcanic caldera that is over 300 meters deep. Unlike its famous neighbor, Empakai’s floor is covered 75% by a deep, blue alkaline lake. It is one of the few places in the Ngorongoro Highlands where you can hike through thick mountain forests, hear the call of the Black and White Colobus monkeys, and stand on the shores of a lake shimmering with thousands of pink flamingos.
