Practical Notes

We would rather you booked something else than had a disappointing morning.

A support vehicle follows

If you've had enough, you get in. Nobody is stranded and nobody has to prove anything. This makes the day workable for mixed-ability groups.

Padded shorts help

Dirt tracks over several hours are hard on the body if you're not used to it. If you own cycling shorts, wear them. If not, it's survivable but you'll notice.

You will be greeted constantly

Expect shouts of jambo from every field and children running alongside. Wave back — it's the best part of the day and it costs nothing.

Dust or mud

Dry season means red dust in everything. Wet season means mud. Wear clothes you don't care about and bring a change for the drive back.

Questions

Answered Plainly

Reasonably. It's 25 to 40 kilometres on dirt with some climbing, spread across a day with proper stops. If you cycle occasionally at home you'll manage the short option comfortably. The long option suits regular riders. A support vehicle follows the whole route, so choosing the short version mid-ride is entirely normal.
Hardtail mountain bikes with front suspension, serviced in Arusha and checked before each ride. Helmets and a basic repair kit are included, and the guide carries spares. Tell us your height when booking so we bring the right frame; very tall riders should mention it specifically.
It's arranged directly with a family we've worked with for years, and the fee goes to them rather than a tour operator. You'll drink chai, talk through your guide and see a working homestead. There's no dancing display and no craft stall — if that's what you're expecting, this will feel underwhelming, which we'd take as a compliment.
We transfer out of Arusha by vehicle specifically to avoid town traffic, and the route runs almost entirely on dirt tracks with very few vehicles. The main hazards are livestock, potholes and the occasional enthusiastic dog. Guides ride front and back, and the support vehicle is never far.
Fourteen, and that's about stamina and the roughness of the tracks rather than cycling ability. Families with younger children should look at the Rau Forest ride near Moshi or the Mto wa Mbu ride, both of which are flat, shorter and much gentler.
Clothes you don't mind ruining — red dust gets into everything in the dry season, mud in the wet. Padded cycling shorts if you own them, sun cream, sunglasses and a buff or scarf for the dust. Bring a full change of clothes for the drive back.
