Down 300 metres to a soda lake inside a crater, with flamingos and no one else.

The ranger and conservation fees are most of this cost, and neither is avoidable.
You're walking at around 3,000 metres. Everything is harder than it looks and the climb out is where people struggle. If you've just arrived in Tanzania, do this later in your trip rather than early.
Buffalo and elephant use these forests. An armed Conservation Area ranger accompanies every group by law, and their instructions are not negotiable.
Lesser flamingo come and go with the lake's salinity. Some weeks there are thousands, some weeks a few hundred. Nobody can promise you a pink lake.
Two hours each way on a bad track. If you get carsick, take something before you set off — the walking is not the only demanding part of this day.
We would rather you booked something else than had a disappointing morning.
Almost everyone does this as an add-on to a crater stay.

The obvious pairing. Crater floor one day, Empakai the next — one busy and famous, one empty and quiet.

On the road between Arusha and the crater, and a good gentler walk before the Empakai effort.

Empakai sits on the northern highlands route. It works well on the day you transfer toward the Serengeti.
