Practical Notes
The ranger and conservation fees are most of this cost, and neither is avoidable.
Altitude matters here
You're walking at around 3,000 metres. Everything is harder than it looks and the climb out is where people struggle. If you've just arrived in Tanzania, do this later in your trip rather than early.
The ranger is mandatory
Buffalo and elephant use these forests. An armed Conservation Area ranger accompanies every group by law, and their instructions are not negotiable.
Flamingo numbers vary
Lesser flamingo come and go with the lake's salinity. Some weeks there are thousands, some weeks a few hundred. Nobody can promise you a pink lake.
The drive is rough
Two hours each way on a bad track. If you get carsick, take something before you set off — the walking is not the only demanding part of this day.

Answered Plainly
This is the most demanding day trip we run. The descent is 300 metres over about forty-five minutes on a steep, often slippery forest path, and the climb back takes most people an hour or more — at around 3,000 metres, where everything is harder. If you don't hike regularly, or you have knee or cardiac issues, please choose something else.
Usually, but numbers swing enormously. Lesser flamingo follow the algae that thrive at particular salinities, so the lake can hold thousands one month and a scattering the next. We'll tell you what recent groups have seen when you book, and we won't promise you a pink lake.
Buffalo and elephant move through the crater forests, and buffalo in thick cover are genuinely dangerous. Ngorongoro Conservation Area regulations require an armed ranger with every walking group. Their fee is built into the price and their instructions are not open to discussion.
Completely different. Ngorongoro is a game drive on a busy crater floor with extraordinary wildlife density. Empakai is a hike into a quiet, deep crater with a lake, birds and views — and often no other visitors at all. Most people do both, and they complement rather than compete.
Two hours each way on a rough track through the highlands, yes. It's part of why Empakai stays empty. If you're prone to motion sickness, take something before you leave. A private vehicle is worth considering if the group is small.
June to October, in the dry season, when the descent path is firm and views are clearest. April and May make the trail slippery and genuinely risky, and we'll often recommend postponing. The lake and flamingo can be good at any time of year.
